Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Replace one or both ink cartridges indicated by the blinking Ink Alert light on the printer control panel.

2. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
3. Lower the output tray, reach inside the printer, grasp the handle, and then lower the ink cartridge access door to open it. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

Remove the old cartridge
4. Lightly press down on one of the old cartridges to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot. Set it aside for recycling. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.

Insert a new cartridge
5. Remove the new cartridge from its package. Be careful to touch only the black plastic on the cartridge.

6. Remove the plastic tape using the pull tab.

Do NOT:
– Remove the copper electrical strip.
– Touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
– Replace the protective tape on the contacts.

7. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, then insert the ink cartridge into its correct slot. Slide the new ink cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and then gently push the ink cartridge until it snaps into place. Repeat these steps to install the other ink cartridge, if necessary. Insert the tri-color ink cartridge into the left slot. Insert the black ink cartridge into the right slot.

8. Close the ink cartridge access door. The printer automatically prints an alignment page. The printer only prints an alignment page automatically when new ink cartridges are installed. To achieve the best print quality, it is necessary to align the ink cartridges.

Align the cartridges
9. Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print. Scanning the alignment page allows the printer to align the ink cartridges and provide the best print quality. If the alignment page fails to automatically print, you can manually print an alignment page using the HP Printer software.
10. Lift the scanner lid.
11. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.

12. Close the scanner lid.
13. Press the Start Copy Black button or the Start Copy Color button on the printer control panel. The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

2. Load unused, plain white letter or A4-sized paper in the tray, if you have not already done so.

Remove the empty cartridge
3. Open the printer cover. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. If the carriage does not move to the center, turn off the printer, and then turn it on again. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.

4. Press down on the empty cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you out its slot. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge
5. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging. Be careful to touch only the black plastic.

6. Gently remove the plastic tape on the cartridge by pulling the colored pull tab.

7. Hold the new cartridge by its sides, so that the copper strip is on the bottom and facing toward the printer. Slide the new print cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot. Then push firmly until the cartridge clicks into place. If you are installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot. If you are installing the black print cartridge, slide it into the right slot. Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if needed.

When installing the cartridge and pressing it into the slot, do not rest your hand on top of the product for leverage. This might cause the carriage to lift out of position.

8. Close the printer cover.

Align the new cartridge
After installing a print cartridge, align the print cartridges to ensure the best print quality. Use the printer Toolbox to align the print cartridges. To open the printer Toolbox:
– Open the Printer Properties dialog box.
– Click the Features tab, and then click the Printer services button. The Toolbox is displayed.
– Click Align the Print Cartridges.
– Click Align, and then follow the on-screen instructions. The product prints a test page, aligns the print cartridges, and calibrates the printer.
– Recycle or discard the test page.
