How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus e-All-in-One series – an Illustrated Tutorial in 9 Steps

Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. When you unbox a new HP inkjet printer and set it up, you install a set of ink tanks that ship with the printer. As you turn on the device and get ready to use it, an initialization sequence localizes it to the country associated with the ink cartridges you installed. HP recommends that you use original HP ink cartridges.

XL (Extra Large) cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print at least double the pages of a regular cartridge. Our advice is that if you print often, go with XL. However, ink can dry up. So if you are not a frequent printer, go with the regular cartridges.

You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software, Control-panel, or the embedded Web server. The icon below on the Control-panel displays a screen where you can see information about the ink cartridges, including fill levels. This icon has a red border when an ink cartridge needs attention. Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace cartridges until prompted to do so.

How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP Deskjet 6988 series Printer – an Illustrated Tutorial in 9 Steps

However, (original) HP XL cartridges for the HP Deskjet 6988 printer are NOT available.

You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software or from the printer control panel. The icons below displays the estimated ink levels. The left status light represents the tri-color print cartridge, which is installed in the left side of the print cartridge cradle. The right status light represents the print cartridge that is installed in the compartment on the right side of the print cartridge cradle. That print cartridge can be the black print cartridge, the photo print cartridge, or the gray photo print cartridge. The lights are on and solid when the cartridge is low on ink. The lights flash when the cartridge needs to be serviced.

To check the ink levels from HP printer software (Windows)
– Open the printer Toolbox.
– Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not have to replace the ink cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable. Use the ink-backup mode to operate the HP Deskjet 6988 with only one ink cartridge. The ink-backup mode is initiated when an ink cartridge is removed from the print cartridge cradle. Printing in ink-backup mode slows the printer and affects the quality of printouts. We do NOT recommend using the photo print cartridge or the gray photo print cartridge for ink-backup mode.

Print cartridge combinations
Four print cartridges can be used with the printer. For printing most documents, use the tri-color print cartridge and the black print cartridge. When printing quality color photos, use the photo print cartridge along with the tri-color print cartridge. For printing high-quality black-and-white photographs, use the gray photo print cartridge in conjunction with the tri-color print cartridge. Always install the tri-color print cartridge in the left side of the print cartridge cradle. Install the black, photo print cartridge, or the gray photo print cartridge in the right side of the print cartridge cradle.

You can check the ink levels by using the software installed with the HP Deskjet:
– Open the Printer Properties dialog box.
– Click the Features tab, and then click the Printer services button. The Toolbox is displayed.
– Click the Estimated Ink Level tab.

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. You do not have to replace the cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable. You’ll usually install both the black and tri-color cartridges in the Deskjet, but you can use the ink-backup mode to operate the HP Deskjet with only one print cartridge. The ink-backup mode is initiated when a print cartridge is removed from the print cartridge carriage. This printing mode lets you print with a single print cartridge, but it slows the product and affects the quality of printouts. We do not recommend using the photo print cartridge for ink-backup mode.
