Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. When you unbox a new HP inkjet printer and set it up, you install a set of ink tanks that ship with the printer. As you turn on the device and get ready to use it, an initialization sequence localizes it to the country associated with the ink cartridges you installed.
HP recommends that you use original HP ink cartridges. XL (Extra Large) cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print at least double the pages of a regular cartridge. Our advice is that if you print often, go with XL. However, ink can dry up. So if you are not a frequent printer, go with the regular cartridges.
You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer control-panel, from the printer Toolbox, or the embedded Web server (EWS).
To check the ink levels from the control panel
Look for two icons at the bottom of the color graphics display that represent the levels of ink remaining in the two installed print cartridges.
– A green icon represents an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the tricolor print cartridge.
– A black icon represents an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the black print cartridge.
– An orange icon represents an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the photo print cartridge.
– A blue-gray icon represents an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the gray photo print cartridge.
If you are using non-HP print cartridges or cartridges that have been refilled, or if there is no print cartridge installed in one of the cartridge stalls, one or both icons might not appear in the icon bar. The HP all-in-one cannot detect the amount of ink remaining in non-HP print cartridges or cartridges that have been refilled.
Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. You do not have to replace the cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable.
Although the manual and online recources of the hp officejet 7310 do not mention an ink-backup (or single-cartrige) mode, you might try to to operate the HP Officejet with only one print cartridge, when you’re out of new cartridges. The ink-backup mode is initiated when a print cartridge is removed from the print cartridge carriage. This printing mode lets you print with a single print cartridge, but it slows the product and affects the quality of printouts. We do not recommend using the photo print cartridge for ink-backup mode.

– Everyday printing: Use the black and tri-color print cartridges for everyday print jobs.

Replace the ink cartridges
1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. After you press the On button, the green light flashes, and then becomes solid. This may take up to a minute. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
2. Load unused, plain white letter or A4-sized paper in the tray, if you have not already done so.
Remove the empty cartridge
3. Open the print-carriage access door by lifting from the front center of the device, until the door locks into place. The print carriage is on the far right side of the HP all-in-one. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before proceeding.
4. Press down lightly on top of the cartridge latch and pull out the bottom of the latch to unhook it.
5. Push down on the print cartridge to release it, and then gently slide the print cartridge out of the print cartridge cradle. If you are replacing the tri-color print cartridge, lift the green latch on the left. If you are replacing the black, photo, or gray photo print cartridge, lift the black latch on the right.
Insert a new cartridge
6. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging. Be careful to touch only the black plastic.
Do NOT:
– Remove the copper electrical strip.
– Touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
– Replace the protective tape on the contacts.
7. Gently remove the plastic tape on the cartridge by pulling the colored pull tab.
8. Hold the print cartridge with the copper contacts facing the printer, and then slide the print cartridge into the empty slot. Push the print cartridge forward until it clicks into place. After you insert the print cartridge, verify that the copper contacts of the print cartridge touch the back of the print cartridge cradle.
If the print cartridge you are installing has a white triangle on its label, slide the print cartridge into the slot on the left. The latch is green with a solid white triangle on it. If the print cartridge you are installing has a white square or a white pentagon on its label, slide the print cartridge into the slot on the right. The latch is black with a solid white square and a solid white pentagon on it.
9. Push down on the print cartridge latch until it stops. Make sure the latch catches below the bottom tabs, and does not spring back open.
10. Repeat step 4 to 9 to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
11. Close the top cover.
Align the ink cartridges.
If you installed a new print cartridge, the printer prints an alignment page and aligns the print cartridges. Recycle or discard the page. Note: If you remove and reinstall the same print cartridge, the HP all-in-one will not prompt you to align the print cartridges. The HP all-in-one remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do not need to realign the print cartridges.
Aligning the print cartridges ensures high-quality output. You can also align the print cartridges at any time from the control panel or by using the HP Image Zone software on your computer.
To align the cartridges from the control panel at any other time:
– Load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray.
– Press Setup.
– Press 6, then press 2.
This displays the Tools menu and then selects Align Print Cartridge.
The HP all-in-one prints a print cartridge alignment sheet and aligns the print cartridges. Recycle or discard the page.
