Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

2. Load plain Letter or A4 white paper in the input tray.

3. Open the printer cover. Wait until the print cartridge cradle moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and silent before you continue.

Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Replace one or both ink cartridges indicated by the blinking Ink Alert light on the printer control panel.

2. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

8. Close the ink cartridge access door. The printer automatically prints an alignment page. The printer only prints an alignment page automatically when new ink cartridges are installed. To achieve the best print quality, it is necessary to align the ink cartridges.

Align the cartridges
9. Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print. Scanning the alignment page allows the printer to align the ink cartridges and provide the best print quality. If the alignment page fails to automatically print, you can manually print an alignment page using the HP Printer software.
10. Lift the scanner lid.

12. Close the scanner lid.
13. Press the Start Copy Black button or the Start Copy Color button on the printer control panel. The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

Remove the old cartridge
2. Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then gently lift to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait several seconds until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.

3. Press the tab inward on the front of the old cartridge to release it, and then pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the slot.

4. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging.
5. Pull the orange tab on the wrapper straight back. Make sure that you remove the orange pull-tab completely otherwise, ink might leak from the cartridge. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to properly vent the cartridge.

5. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then twist the protective orange cap counter-clockwise to snap it off the cartridge. Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

6. Turn the cartridge so that the cartridge contacts face downward, and then match the label color with the color dot on the carriage. Slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks securely into the slot and it is firmly seated. Replace the ink cartridges

1. Before you replace the cartridges load plain white paper in the input tray.
2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

Remove the old cartridge
3. Locate the slots on the left and right sides of the printer. Slide your fingers into the two slots, and then gently lift up to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the right side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

4. To release the cartridge, lift the lid on the cartridge slot, and then gently push the lid back until it stops. Pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the slot.

8. Repeat the previous steps to install the other cartridge, if necessary.
9. Close the cartridge access door.

Align the cartridges
10. Follow the instructions on the control panel to start the cartridge alignment. The printer aligns the cartridges, and then prints an alignment page. Load the alignment page print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass, close the lid, and then press OK to complete the alignment.

11. Recycle or discard the ink cartridge alignment sheet.

The alignment page did not print?
If the printer did not print an alignment page, follow these steps to manually align the printer:

To align the cartridges from the printer software
– In the printer software, click Print, Scan & Fax, and then click Maintain Your Printer to access the Printer Toolbox.
– The Printer Toolbox appears.
– Click Align Ink Cartridges on the Device Services tab. The printer prints an alignment sheet.

To align the cartridges from the printer display
– From the Home screen on the printer display, press the Up and Down buttons to select Tools, and then press OK.
NOTE: If you do not see the Home screen, press the Home button.
– From the Tools menu on the printer display, select Align Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions.
