How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP Officejet H470 Printer series – an Illustrated Tutorial in 11 Steps

HP OfficeJet H470 Mobile Printer

Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. Unlike other inkjet manufacturers, HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. When you unbox a new HP inkjet printer and set it up, you install a set of ink tanks that ship with the printer. As you turn on the device and get ready to use it, an initialization sequence localizes it to the country associated with the ink cartridges you installed.

HP recommends that you use original HP ink cartridges. XL (Extra Large) cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print at least double the pages of a regular cartridge. However, (original) HP XL cartridges for the HP Officejet H470 Printer series are NOT available.

You can check the ink levels by using the software (Toolbox) installed with the HP Deskjet.
Open the Toolbox from the HP Solution Center, or from HP Digital Imaging Monitor in the system tray (right click), or from the Printer Properties.
– The tab Estimated Ink Level shows the estimated ink level for each cartridge.

The printer lights also indicate the cartridge status. The left print cartridge light blinks when the left print cartridge is absent or improperly functioning. It turns on solid when the ink is low or empty. The right print cartridge light blinks when the right print cartridge is absent or improperly functioning. It turns on solid when the ink is low or empty.

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. You do not have to replace the cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable. If one of the print cartridges runs out of ink before you can replace it, you can still print with a single print cartridge. Printing with one print cartridge might be slower and the print quality might be affected. It is recommended to print with both print cartridges.

Which ink cartridges do I need for my HP Officejet H470 Printer series Printer?

Three print cartridges are available for use with the printer.

1. Black
2. Tri-color
3. Photo

Everyday printing: Use the black and tri-color print cartridges for everyday print jobs.
– Quality color photos: For more vibrant colors when printing color photographs or other special documents, remove the black print cartridge and use a photo print cartridge in combination with the tri-color print cartridge.

For your US HP Officejet H470 Printer you need HP 94 Black OR HP 98 Black cartridges AND HP 95 Tri-color OR HP 97 Tri-color cartridges.

For printing photos use HP 99 Photo Original cartridges.

For your European or UK HP Officejet H470 Printer you need HP 337 Black OR HP 338 Black cartridges AND HP 343 Tri-color OR HP 344 Tri-color cartridges.

For printing photos use HP 348 Photo Original cartridges.

Remove the empty cartridge
3. Open the front access cover. Wait for the carriage to stop moving. This should take only a few seconds.

4. Lift the print cartridge latch open and gently remove the empty print cartridge from its cradle compartment. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge OR photo print cartridges.

How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP Deskjet 5740 Series Printer – an Illustrated Tutorial in 10 Steps

HP DeskJet 5740 Color Inkjet Printer

Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. Unlike other inkjet manufacturers, HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. HP recommends that you use Original HP ink cartridges. XL (Extra Large) cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print at least double the pages of a regular cartridge. Our advice is that if you print often, go with XL. However, ink can dry up. So if you are not a frequent printer, go with the regular cartridges.

You can check the ink levels by using the software installed with the HP Deskjet. The Device Status window appears each time the printer prints a file. The Ink levels section shows the approximate ink level of each print cartridge.

The Print Cartridge Status lights also indicate the status of the print cartridges. The lights are located in the center of the printer’s control panel.

The left status light represents the tri-color print cartridge, which is installed in the left side of the print cartridge cradle.
– The light is on and solid when the tri-color print cartridge is low on ink.
– The light flashes when the tri-color print cartridge needs to be serviced.

The right status light represents the black OR the photo print cartridge. One of these print cartridges is installed in the right side of the print cartridge cradle.
– The light is on and solid when the black or photo print cartridge is low on ink.
– The light flashes when the black OR photo print cartridge needs to be serviced.

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. You do not have to replace the cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable. You’ll usually install both the black and tri-color cartridges in the Deskjet, but you can use the Ink-backup Printing Mode to operate the HP Deskjet with only one print cartridge. The ink-backup mode is initiated when a print cartridge is removed from the print cartridge cradle. This printing mode lets you print with a single print cartridge, but it slows the product and affects the quality of printouts. We do not recommend using the photo print cartridge for ink-backup mode.

How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP Photosmart 8750 series Printer – an Illustrated Tutorial in 12 Steps

HP Photosmart 8750 Large-Format Professional Photo Printer (Q5747A#ABA)

However, (original) HP XL cartridges for the HP Photosmart 8750 series printer are NOT available.

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not have to replace the ink cartridges until the print quality is unacceptable. Use the ink-backup mode to operate the HP Photosmart 8750 with only one ink cartridge. The ink-backup mode is initiated when an ink cartridge is removed from the print cartridge cradle. Printing in ink-backup mode slows the printer and affects the quality of printouts. HP does not recommend using the photo print cartridge or the gray photo print cartridge for ink-backup mode.

Print cartridge combinations
Four print cartridges can be used with the printer:

1. Black print cartridge
2. Tri-color print cartridge
3. Photo print cartridge
4. Gray photo print cartridge

It appears that HP 101 and HP 102 cartridges are obsolete, although you might still find some online. The best combination now seems to be: black, tri-color, photo preferably HP 96 AND HP 97 AND HP 99 (OR 100). You must install all three cartridges in order for the printer to work as intended.

So, which ink cartridges do I need for my HP Photosmart 8750 series Printer?

For your US HP Photosmart 8750 series Printer you need HP 96 Black AND HP 97 Tri-color cartridges.
For printing photos use HP 99 Photo Original cartridges.
For printing high-quality black-and-white photographs use HP 100 Gray photo cartridges.

For your European or UK HP Photosmart 8750 series Printer you need HP 339 Black AND HP 343 Tri-color cartridges.

For printing high-quality black-and-white photographs use HP 100 Gray photo cartridges.
