How to Replace an Empty Ink Cartridge in the HP DeskJet 3639 All-in-One series Printer – an Illustrated Tutorial in 18 Steps

Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. When you unbox a new HP inkjet printer and set it up, you install a set of ink tanks that ship with the printer. As you turn on the device and get ready to use it, an initialization sequence localizes it to the country associated with the ink cartridges you installed. HP recommends that you use original HP ink cartridges.

XL (Extra Large) cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print at least double the pages of a regular cartridge. Our advice is that if you print often, go with XL. However, ink can dry up. So if you are not a frequent printer, go with the regular cartridges.

You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software or from the printer control panel. Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. To check the estimated ink levels from the HP printer control panel:

Ink Alert light
One of the Ink Level icons is blinking with no segment, the Ink Alert light is on, and the Resume light is blinking means: The corresponding ink cartridge is very low on ink.

Ink Level Icons
The left ink icon shows the estimated ink level of the tri-color cartridge, and the right icon shows the estimated ink level of the black cartridge.

To check the ink levels from the HP printer software (Windows):
– Open the HP printer software.
– In the printer software, click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.

Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

2. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
3. Close the output tray extender, and then rotate the output tray clockwise to stow it in the printer

4. Open the front door of the printer.

5. Open the ink cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

Remove the old cartridge
6. Lightly press down on one of the old cartridges to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot. Set it aside for recycling. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge. Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.

Insert a new cartridge
7. Remove the new cartridge from its package. Be careful to touch only the black plastic on the cartridge.

8. Remove the plastic tape using the pull tab.

Do NOT:
– Remove the copper electrical strip.
– Touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
– Replace the protective tape on the contacts.

9. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, then insert the ink cartridge into its correct slot. Push the ink cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place. Repeat these steps to install the other ink cartridge, if necessary. Insert the tri-color ink cartridge into the left slot. Insert the black ink cartridge into the right slot.

10. Close the ink cartridge access door.

11. Close the front door of the printer.

12. Pull out the output tray and the tray extender.

13. Follow any prompts on the computer screen.

Align the cartridges
14. Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print. The printer only prints an alignment page automatically when new ink cartridges are installed. Scanning the alignment page allows the printer to align the ink cartridges and provide the best print quality. If the alignment page fails to automatically print, you can manually print an alignment page using the HP Printer Assistant software (Windows) or the Printer Utility (Mac OS X).
15. Lift the scanner lid.
16. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.

17. Close the scanner lid.
18. Press the Start Copy Black button OR the Start Copy Color button on the printer control panel. The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

Replace the ink cartridges

1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

2. Load unused plain white Letter or A4-sized paper into the input tray.

Remove the empty cartridge
3. Open the cartridge access door by placing two fingers under one or both of the small handles on the sides of the cartridge access door and then lifting it up. Wait until the print cartridge cradle is idle and silent before you continue.

4. Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot. Set it aside for recycling.
– Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge.
– Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge
5. Remove the new cartridge from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge by holding the ink cartridge by its sides.

6. Pull the colored tab to remove the protective tape from the cartridge.

Do NOT:
– Remove the copper electrical strip.
– Touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
– Replace the protective tape on the contacts.

7. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
– Insert the tri-color cartridge into the left slot.
– Insert the black cartridge into the right slot.

8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to insert the other cartridge, if necessary.

9. Close the cartridge access door. The printer starts an initialization process. It is normal for the printer to make noises during this process.

Align the cartridges

The HP printer software prompts you to align the ink cartridges when you print a document after installing a new ink cartridge.
– Touch OK.
– Wait for the printer to calibrate and align the cartridges. After the alignment is complete, the printer prints an alignment page.
– Load the cartridge alignment sheet print side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

– Follow the instructions on the printer display to align the cartridges, and then discard or recycle the alignment page.

The alignment page did not print?
If the alignment page did not print automatically, you can align the cartridges manually from the printer software.

– In the HP printer software, click Print & Scan, and then click Maintain Your Printer to access the Printer Toolbox.
– In Printer Toolbox, click Align Cartridges on the Device Services tab. The printer prints an alignment sheet.

Replace the ink cartridges.

1. Look at the Power button located on the printer. If it is not lit, the printer is turned off. Press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.

Remove the old cartridge
2. Open the front door.

3. Open the cartridge access door. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.

4. Press the tab on the front of the cartridge inward to release it, and then pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the slot.

Insert the new cartridge
5. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging by pulling the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridge. Make sure you remove the orange pull-tab completely. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to vent the cartridge. Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts and ink port.

6. Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides, and then twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off. A forceful twist may be required to remove the cap.

7. Gently bend the tab away from the ink cartridge. Be careful not to bend the tab out more than 1.27 cm (0.5 in). Moving the tab too far might damage the ink cartridge or cause the tab to break.

8. Hold the ink cartridge so that the ink cartridge contacts are facing down and toward the printer. Match the colored dot on the ink cartridge with the dot of the same color on the carriage. Slide the new ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently press the ink cartridge down until it clicks into place and is seated firmly in the slot. Make sure that the color-coded letter on the cartridge matches that on the slot.

9. Repeat step 3 to 7 for each ink cartridge you are replacing.

10. Close the ink cartridge access door.

11. Close the front door.

Align the printhead only if necessary.
The printer automatically aligns the printhead during the initial setup. The printhead does not have to be realigned when cartridges are replaced. However, you might want to use this feature for print quality issues in printouts where straight lines look wavy or jagged. You can align the printhead from the printer display and from the HP printer software.
